Dollar Store Christmas Village
For years my kids have been asking me to get for them a little Christmas Village… and I haven’t.
The reason why is because the cool ones are extremely expensive
and the cheap ones are 15 dollars a house. NO WAY!
But this year the Dollar Store made it possible!
I made their little dream come true when I found the perfect little Village during a trip to my local Dollar Store.
The price was amazing since we got the entire village { houses, people and trees } for $15.00… the price of one house…
but I was still not crazy about the colors and look.
Check out their poor faces! It looked like some of them were having a bad make-up day .
So this is what I did to improve the situation.
I got the spray paint out and gave the Village and its people a little makeover with a light coat of paint.
I did not go crazy with it… just enough spray paint to cover the imperfections and still see the original colors through the paint.
I was surprise with what a huge difference such a simple step made.
Here is a closer look..
With the help of a small amount of acrylic paint mixed with water, I touched up some areas { as the trees and doors } to bring a little more color out.
After I was happy with the overall look I used Krylon Glitter Blast Spray { I love this stuff } to add some sparkle to the Village…
It is Christmas after all!
I let everything dry and I was done… our Village looked perfect to us!
So with the help of our sweet children we put it all together.
This was my favorite part… the kids were so excited!
This is how it looks at night…
The children love the sparkle from the glitter and I love the sparkle in their eyes.
I will take some more pictures in the morning so you can really see how cute they look but now I better go… this girl is going shopping today!
Have a FUN BLACK Friday!
See you tomorrow during STICKER TIME!
Besos!
what dollar ‘store’? dollar tree? family dollar? dollar general?
Dollar Tree!
I LOVE this idea! I have been wanting a Christmas village but also did not want to pay the high prices. I never thought to make over the ones from the Dollar Store. I can’t wait to try this!
After having so much fun doing the haunted village, decided I just had to do the Christmas village, too. So looking forward to displaying my new creation for Christmas.
This project is THE BEST!! I read it this morning and immediately turned off the computer, rounded up my kids, and drove straight to the dollar store. I then came right home, painted the village and all of its people, posted the project on my blog, and of course linked to you! You are awesome and BTW, that red suitcase covered with fabric rocks!
xo,
Kathleen
You did an awesome job!
I saw this post a few weeks ago and it stuck in my mind! So when I was at my local cheapie store, I found little village parts for $1 each. The colors were garish and tacky so I gave the a light whitewash with some watered down acrylic paint and now they are lovely! Your idea was such genius! The whitewash made all the difference. My husband was dubious, but he likes them so much better now that they are toned down. Thank you for sharing your lovely village! Now I have one for the price of $8 (and some paint that I already have on hand). Thank you thank you! xo
I am so happy that you gave it a try. We love our little village as well… Enjoy!
I picked some of these up the other day and was thinking of doing the same sort of thing! nice!! Do you have lights in them??
Erin, you can put lights inside.
What a wonderful idea!!! Love it!
Wow! You know what I love most about this cute project? Any idiot (including me) could do it. Thanks for providing a very classy craft idea for us non-crafters. Going to the dollar store now!
I love it! I can’t wait to see yours!
What a creative idea! I think it would be beautiful to add a little glitter paint to some of the roofs & trees as well.
I LOVE this idea. Our Christmas village has been pieced together over the years, so nothing exactly matches anything else – kinda like our family LOL I LOVE what you’ve done with yours! I have some pieces I got at the Dollar store last weekend, to add to what we already have – and I would LIKE to think I’ll something similar, now that I have seen what is possible. Thank you!
