Hello!
I was planning to start posting today about our laundry room
but last night we got a little distracted making chocolate and churros.
In other words I didn’t have the time to get my post ready…
that’s what happens when you are eating goodies with your family!
For me churros are all about memories and tradition.
Churros have to be the official Spanish Treat!
Actually you can find churrerias { Churro Shops } and Churro Carts pretty much in every city of Spain.
One of the oldest Spanish traditions is to have churros and chocolate on New Year’s Day for breakfast.
After celebrating La Noche Vieja { the old night } what we call here New Years Eve,
Spaniards gather in front of these carts and “churrerias” to eat this special treat.
If you want the best churros and the best hot chocolate ever you must visit Madrid!
RECIPE
Spain’s HOT Chocolate is super thick.
It is almost like a hot pudding where you dip your churros.
This is how I make it here using ingredients from our beautiful USA.
1 Quart of 2% Milk + 1 Cup Of 2% Milk
4 Tb Unsweetened Cocoa
1/2 Cup Sugar or more to taste.
2 Tb Corn Starch.
{ You can substitute the cornstarch for two packages of Chocolate Maizena.
You can find it at Wal-Mart over at the Hispanic Food isle.
This is what you are looking for.}
Dissolve the contents of the envelope or the corn starch in one cup of cold milk.
Stir the cold milk mixture into 1 quart of boiling milk.
Add the sugar and continue boiling for about 2 minutes over slow heat stirring constantly.
You’ll notice it will start getting thick and even thicker as it cools down.
CHURROS
Churros are super easy to make and kids love them!
1 cup water
2 1/2 tablespoons white sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter.
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 quarts oil for frying
Optional:
1/2 cup white sugar, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine water,
2 1/2 tablespoons sugar, salt and 4 Tablespoons butter or margarine.
Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
Stir in flour until mixture forms a ball.
Spoon the mixture right away into a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip.
{ It is easier to work with the dough while it is hot }
Heat oil for frying in deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Pipe strips of dough into hot oil using the pastry bag.
They will fry until golden in just a minute or so.
Drain your churros on paper towels.
OPTIONAL:
Combine 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.
Roll drained churros in cinnamon and sugar mixture.
Serve the churros while hot with the HOT chocolate.
Dip it, share it, eat it and love it!
Enjoy!
Happy Memorial Day!
Besos!
Desirée
These look incredible!
I lived in Madrid as a child and have been back a few times as an adult and remember how yummy the thick hot chocolate and churros were especially when it was cold out. They have them here in Miami, but they’re just not the same. I’m going to have to try your recipe, casue they look amazing!
Jacky… don’t you love Madrid? I believe churros taste better there 😉
Oh these look lovely!!! Would it be horrific cheating if I went down to the costco down the street and bought churros, but made the chocolate?! Those churros are my sons most absolute favorite treat in the world!
Lizy, go for it!
What a fun thing to add to the Memorial day celebration. I haven’t had a Churro in decades but what a fun thing to make on a day in America like today, when family is together and everyone is celebrating summer. S’mores are good but how fun to change it up…. Yummm-oooo
Here I was in Spain a couple of weeks ago and didn’t know that tradition. I would have been looking for them. We spent a couple of days touring Barcelona, Spain and found it ot be very interesting. I can see why you love it.
Bonnie,
I am so happy that you got to visit my country. I hope you had a wonderful time there.
I love Barcelona, the buildings, the people and the food. I wish I could have gone with you and show you around.
Did you go to the Ramblas? I love that street!
Jenna!
You have never had a churro… girl you HAVE to make them!
Thanks for this wonderfully delicious post. I’m from Galicia in Spain although I don’t live there now. I was there last summer and ate churros from the ferias constantly. Occassionally went into the churrerias to have them with chocolate. Oh do those calories stick. LOLLL They were even selling chocolate churros this year which I hadn’t seen before.
One of my best friends growing up is from Galicia.
I love the Gallego accent!
I am going back to Spain next Summer and trust me that is one of the things I want to try right away churros “fresquitos” en las fiestas del pueblo 😉
Happy Memorial Day!
Que rico! I am from Peru but we have churros there as well, I am going to try your recipe! And I love Madrid, hope to go back one day!
Claudia I don’t think my churros are as good as those from Madrid. They taste better walking down Gran Via 😉
Oh how I LOVE Madrid!
Love this post! I am from Costa Rica, but with my Dad’s work we lived in Mexico City, where there is a lot of Spanish influence, and as a child I remember going to a Churreria and having that delicious thick chocolate and churros. I didn’t know it was a tradition to have it on New Years Day!! Learn something new everyday!! Thanks for this post it just brought sweet memories of my childhood! And of my sweet mom and dad who are now in heaven with Jesus!! Have I told you how much I love yor blog! Well I do!! 🙂
Thank you so much Cristiana.
That is something I love about food… it takes you to places that for some reason you remember forever!
Happy Memorial Day!
These look amazing! And super easy. I’m going to have to make them soon.
Thanks for sharing some of the backstory behind churros. I’d never even heard of them before!
