Hello!
I was planning to start posting today about our laundry room
but last night we got a little distracted making chocolate and churros.
In other words I didn’t have the time to get my post ready…
that’s what happens when you are eating goodies with your family!
For me churros are all about memories and tradition.
Churros have to be the official Spanish Treat!
Actually you can find churrerias { Churro Shops } and Churro Carts pretty much in every city of Spain.
One of the oldest Spanish traditions is to have churros and chocolate on New Year’s Day for breakfast.
After celebrating La Noche Vieja { the old night } what we call here New Years Eve,
Spaniards gather in front of these carts and “churrerias” to eat this special treat.
If you want the best churros and the best hot chocolate ever you must visit Madrid!
RECIPE
Spain’s HOT Chocolate is super thick.
It is almost like a hot pudding where you dip your churros.
This is how I make it here using ingredients from our beautiful USA.
1 Quart of 2% Milk + 1 Cup Of 2% Milk
4 Tb Unsweetened Cocoa
1/2 Cup Sugar or more to taste.
2 Tb Corn Starch.
{ You can substitute the cornstarch for two packages of Chocolate Maizena.
You can find it at Wal-Mart over at the Hispanic Food isle.
This is what you are looking for.}
Dissolve the contents of the envelope or the corn starch in one cup of cold milk.
Stir the cold milk mixture into 1 quart of boiling milk.
Add the sugar and continue boiling for about 2 minutes over slow heat stirring constantly.
You’ll notice it will start getting thick and even thicker as it cools down.
CHURROS
Churros are super easy to make and kids love them!
1 cup water
2 1/2 tablespoons white sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter.
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 quarts oil for frying
Optional:
1/2 cup white sugar, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine water,
2 1/2 tablespoons sugar, salt and 4 Tablespoons butter or margarine.
Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
Stir in flour until mixture forms a ball.
Spoon the mixture right away into a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip.
{ It is easier to work with the dough while it is hot }
Heat oil for frying in deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Pipe strips of dough into hot oil using the pastry bag.
They will fry until golden in just a minute or so.
Drain your churros on paper towels.
OPTIONAL:
Combine 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.
Roll drained churros in cinnamon and sugar mixture.
Serve the churros while hot with the HOT chocolate.
Dip it, share it, eat it and love it!
Enjoy!
Happy Memorial Day!
Besos!

Los churros con chocolate son lo mejor del invierno, cuando paseas por la calle arenal de madrid disfrutando de sus adornos navideños no se puede dejar de visitar la churreria San Guines.
Have you shared the Spanish omelette recipe yet? (With onion, of course) They NEED to know. It’s my favourite dish ever, even over Russian caviar or any delicatessen you might think of. I returned this past August to the summer camp I worked in 25 years ago, up in Vermont, for their fair day. My friend begged me for it. My hubby & I made 2 huge ones. Everybody forgot about the food concessions and wanted a taste of the omelette, but my -pregnant- friend was quite stingy!!
(And then Ben&Jerry’s ice cream for dessert)
Have a great day!
Cris
Every summer we have “Fair” day where I make the junk food from all the festivals and fairs we are usually not attending. Last year I made churros but I did NOT think to dip the buggers in chocolate.

I am so excited to make this! I served my mission in Spain and I crave churros and chocolate, but they just don’t have anything like it here in the States! Thank you for sharing! I might be asking for more tips on Spanish food 🙂
Kathleen where is Spain? I served my mission in Madrid!
I served in Madrid as well…in 2004-2005. I lived in Toledo for about half of my mission. Also served in Barrios 1 and 4, if I’m remembering right! 🙂 I can’t wait to go back and visit…would love to live there for a while. My fiance served in France, so it would be a perfect place for us to go! What part of Spain are you from?
No way! I served in Madrid back in 96-97. Back then Barrio 4 was Rama 4. My favorite area!
These look so good! Thanks for the recipe, Desiree! Yum!
Thank you Kami!
Thank you so much for sharing this…..I love Churros but being in Australia they are relatively new to us with only a couple of places offering them. My hubby is going to love me F-O-R-E-V-E-R now he knows I can make these at home 🙂
I love churros but have never had them with the hot chocolate! I will try this…The Churreria looks absolutely beautiful, I would love to dine there!
Brings back wonderful memories of when I travelled round Spain in 2005. I lived on Churros for breakfast then!
Oh how fun!
